This years (2010) Itlus Annual Conference took place during a very severe Artic spell of weather, road conditions were very poor and Dubkin Airport was closed several times during the previous few days.
Because of the conditions the schedule for the day had to be curtailed, two of our intended speakers were unable to attend and to allow members to travel home earlier the AGM was posponed.

Our first speaker of the day was Prof Jimmy Burke of Teagasc, he gave a very comprehensive presentation on crop breeding, how new technologies had been adopted by breeders as they became available over the years. Dr. Bourke then explained the development of GMO’s and spoke about their acceptancein various markets and their place in global production.

Our next speaker was Mr Bill Angus of Limagrain. Bill’s presentation explained how new technologies which have only recently become available should make the job of breeding new wheat varieties with known characteristics much faster and more precise and may also allow stacking of multiple desireable into one variety.

After Lunch we had a report and slideshow by Eugene Ryan on the Society’s recent study tour to Canada.

Our last speaker of the day was Mr Kevin Rosenbohm, Kevin spoke on his experiences both as a farmer and as a seed processor with growing GM crops and dealing with the seed companies. Kevin and his family also have a farming operation in Brasil and he spoke with great clarity of his experience in growing crops there.
